Who we are

Groza Media is a project covering higher education and youth policy in Russia. Our mission is to create an independent information environment for young people — an alternative to state propaganda that fosters critical thinking, civic engagement, and a drive for positive change in society.

Founded in 2020 as an independent outlet for Kazan students, Groza has spent the last six years expanding its reach across the country. Today, we operate regional branches in Kazan, Yekaterinburg and Novosibirsk alongside a national-level outlet.

We conduct investigations, research, reports, and journalistic materials based on conversations with our broad base of sources in the academic and activist communities, covering the context of youth life in contemporary Russia.

What topics do we cover

Changes in Russian Higher Education & Academic Community. We track the growing repression within universities and colleges, restrictions on freedom of speech, curtailing ties with the international community.

Youth Policy. We conduct deep research on how the state attempts to influence and mobilize young people to support Putin's regime.

Militarization of higher education. Our team tracks the systemic push to integrate military recruitment and programs into universities’ and colleges' curriculum.
